UPDATE: Virgin Australia has just opened bookings for pets on domestic flights, marking a significant shift in travel options for Australian pet owners. Starting today, tickets are available for flights that will allow cats and dogs to travel in the cabin, with the inaugural trips set for October 16 between Melbourne and the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast.

For an introductory fee of $149 per animal, pet owners can now take their furry companions on board. However, this service is currently limited to small cats and dogs. Pets must be transported in a compliant, soft-sided, leak-proof carrier, and the total weight of the pet and carrier must not exceed eight kilograms. The carrier must remain stowed under the seat for the duration of the flight, and pets are not permitted to exit their carriers at any time.

In a statement, Virgin Australia Group Chief Executive Officer, Dave Emerson, emphasized the demand for this service, noting, “Our guests have been telling us for years how much they want to travel alongside their pets, and now they finally can.” This initiative aims to replicate the success seen in countries like the US and Europe.

Travelers wishing to fly with their pets are advised to arrive at the airport with the carrier secured with cable ties, except for one opening, and to include an absorbent mat inside. A maximum of four pets is allowed per flight, and all animals must be vaccinated. Additionally, pets under eight weeks old cannot fly, and those with health conditions must carry a vet’s note.

Public reaction to Virgin Australia’s new pet travel policy has been mixed. A recent survey conducted by Yahoo News indicated that while many Australians support the initiative, concerns about hygiene and space on flights linger. One traveler expressed excitement, stating she would “prefer a pet over a human” nearby, while others voiced worries that the presence of animals might disrupt the flying experience.

Virgin Australia’s move comes at a time when airlines are increasingly looking to enhance customer experience by offering new services. With the travel industry rebounding, the inclusion of pets in the cabin could attract more travelers seeking companionship during flights.
