UPDATE: A heroic team of volunteer seamen and women from Marine Rescue Port Macquarie has successfully rescued a crew from a sinking vessel after a tense three-hour mission on October 16, 2025. This urgent operation unfolded when a 15-metre motor cruiser lost power and drifted dangerously onto rocks at the notorious Hastings River Bar.
Officials report that the vessel’s skipper faced a complete mechanical failure while crossing the treacherous bar, prompting a fast response from the Marine Rescue team. Unit Commander Greg Davies emphasized, “If it hadn’t been for their quick thinking and calmness under pressure, we would almost certainly have seen lives lost.”
As conditions worsened, the crew found themselves in a precarious situation. “This was a 50-foot cruiser disabled right in the middle of the bar on an outgoing tide,” said PM30 skipper Robert Breskal. “That’s not the place you want to be, and certainly not the place you want to be trying to effect a rescue.”
After four failed attempts to secure a tow line to the distressed vessel, the Marine Rescue team improvised a daring plan. They decided to cut the cruiser’s anchor, allowing it to drift away from the rocks. This innovative approach ultimately led to a successful tow and ensured the safety of all involved.
Breskal described the situation as tense but ultimately rewarding, stating, “We had to adapt on the run.” Remarkably, the operation concluded without any injuries or loss of life, showcasing the volunteers’ dedication and skill in a life-threatening scenario.
In recognition of their bravery, the team received the Professional Volunteer Commendation at the Australian Search and Rescue Awards held on October 16 at Queensland Parliament House. Marine Rescue NSW continues to support local communities and keep boaters safe on the water through their volunteer efforts.
This urgent rescue mission highlights the vital role that volunteer organizations play in maritime safety, and their ability to respond effectively in life-or-death situations. As reported by officials, the quick actions of these volunteers not only saved lives but also serve as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of waterway navigation.
