UPDATE: The annual WA Day Festival has officially begun, transforming Burswood Park into a vibrant hub of excitement and entertainment for families across the region. Kicking off yesterday, this two-day celebration promises a thrilling lineup of activities and attractions.
Families flocked to the festival grounds as the action-packed agenda unveiled a variety of events designed to engage and inspire. Highlights included jaw-dropping performances by Hardwired BMX, where six-year-old sensation Ziggy wowed crowds with his impressive tricks during three exhilarating shows.
Food enthusiasts gathered at the Spudshed Stage to witness Channel 7’s Rick Ardon put a daring twist on traditional fare by crafting haggis-filled spring rolls, sparking both curiosity and delight among festival-goers.
The atmosphere was electric, with a steady stream of visitors lining up for the popular bumper cars, while the iconic RAC rescue choppers offered a unique opportunity for children and adults alike to explore the cockpit and even try virtual reality headsets, simulating emergency scenarios high in the sky.
As excitement swirled through the park, cheers from the day two of the Ashes could be heard from nearby Optus Stadium. Festival attendees seeking a break from the sun could retreat to the Seven West Media summer lounge, equipped with deck chairs and a big screen for cricket updates. Channel 7 personalities, including the beloved Fat Cat, were on hand for photos and friendly chats.
Among the attendees, the Greaves family took a moment to watch the cricket after enjoying several thrilling rides. Four-year-old Mackenzie savored her ice cream while her sister, Maddison, proudly displayed her glittery dolphin face paint.
The festival’s Hancock Iron Ore Innovation and Education Alley featured interactive stalls aimed at sparking children’s interest in future careers. Five-year-old Esther Prentice engaged with a robot dog at the Alcoa tent, much to the delight of her family visiting from Melbourne. “It’s been a day of family fun,” her father Cain Prentice noted.
Children flocked to the Perth Mint stall in hopes of striking gold, while the Hancock Iron Ore digger captivated young audiences. Ten-year-old Sophia Brazier exclaimed her excitement over panning for gold, a favorite among many families.
As appetite grew, festival-goers enjoyed a variety of food options, including classic chips on a stick, gozleme, and tempting American diner snacks. The ever-popular sausage sizzle was also a hit, ensuring no one left hungry.
The festival atmosphere was further enlivened by Fliptease entertainers performing on stilts and dazzling attendees in disco costumes. Clare Shaw said she brought her family because the event “looked like an amazing event,” and it did not disappoint. “It’s been a big family fun day,” she shared.
As night fell, live music and a spectacular drone show captivated audiences, culminating in a stunning fireworks display. Homegrown artist Drapht closed out the thrilling first day, leaving everyone eager for day two’s festivities.
