URGENT UPDATE: Wagga is in mourning as beloved poet Joan Cahill has passed away at the age of 87. Cahill died on December 26, 2025, at Wagga Base Hospital, surrounded by her family after battling multiple health issues.

Joan Cahill was a vibrant figure in the literary community, known for her engaging and quirky poems that brought joy to many. Her contributions began at the Booranga Writers’ Centre in the early 2000s, where she not only honed her writing skills but also published her poetry and supported fellow writers. “She was always lively, intelligent, and not someone who would sit quietly by,” said David Gilbey, president of the Booranga Writers’ Centre, who had known Cahill for over 15 years.

Cahill was an award-winning poet, earning accolades such as the 2012 Melbourne Poets Union’s Urban Realism Award and the 2013 First Prize for the Fellowship of Australian Writers Regional’s Vibrant Verse. Her notable works include two poetry collections, Buddha’s Left Foot (2016) and The Whirling Dervish (2022). Gilbey remarked, “Her poems were engaging and quick to connect with an audience; so many people warmed to her.”

In addition to her literary achievements, Cahill dedicated over 25 years to the Wagga Art Gallery, contributing approximately 11,500 hours to guiding and educating students and the public through exhibitions. The gallery expressed their sorrow, stating, “Joan brought tremendous joy and enthusiasm about our gallery to the lives of so many. Our thoughts and love are with Joan’s family and friends at this sad time.”

Just days before her passing, Cahill exchanged heartfelt messages with Gilbey, expressing her appreciation for their long relationship. “I was moved almost to tears reading her messages; she lived right until the very end,” he shared.

Cahill’s legacy as a poet and educator will undoubtedly leave a profound impact on the community of Wagga. As tributes pour in, many are reflecting on the warmth and humor she brought into their lives. Her sharp wit and kind heart will be remembered by all who had the privilege to know her.

Updates on memorial services and tributes will be shared as details become available.
