BREAKING: Wangaratta Pies have just announced the signing of Jack Mapleson, a dynamic half-back known for his speed, who previously played under coach Jason Heatley at North Heidelberg. This move comes as Wangaratta aims to strengthen its roster ahead of the upcoming season in the Ovens and King League.

In a statement, Mapleson expressed excitement about the opportunity, stating, “We had a chat, and he spoke about the big grounds and plenty of space suiting my game, so I thought I’d have a crack at the O and M.” This 27-year-old player, originally from Sale but raised in Coffs Harbour, has an impressive background, having been part of the Sydney Swans Academy and competing in the NEAFL in 2017.

Mapleson is not just any recruit; he brings a wealth of experience from his time with both North Heidelberg and Aberfeldie, where he played alongside his brother-in-law Michael Ktona. He stood out last season, securing third place in North Heidelberg’s best and fairest award under Heatley’s guidance.

The Pies are making headlines for their aggressive off-season strategy, having already added a total of 183 goals from last season’s league. Notably, Brady Bartlett from Milawa scored an impressive 112 goals, including a staggering 19-goal game against Benalla All Blacks. Furthermore, James McClounan, a former Wangaratta player, contributed another 71 goals.

However, the team faces challenges as they confirm departures of key players including Alex Federico (Ivanhoe), Tyler Norton (Bell Park), Hunter Gottschling (Surf Coast Suns), and Jasper Craven who has moved back to Queensland.

Mapleson’s arrival is part of a larger trend as the Pies also welcome Airport West duo Tyson Young and Lachie Di Sebastiano, further boosting their competitive edge. As the team prepares for the upcoming season, all eyes are on Wangaratta to see how these strategic moves will impact their performance.

With Mapleson’s speed and Heatley’s coaching acumen, the Pies are poised for an exciting season ahead. Fans are eager to see how the integration of new talents will unfold, making this a critical moment for Wangaratta’s aspirations in the league. Stay tuned for more updates as the situation develops!
