whittlesea-council-moves-to-update-heritage-overlay-provisions

URGENT UPDATE: Whittlesea Council has just voted to modernize its heritage overlay provisions, aiming to enhance decision-making and streamline planning permit processes. The council is seeking authorization from the Minister for Planning to prepare and exhibit a planning scheme amendment that will propose updates to information for 73 properties currently under the heritage overlay.

This critical move comes in response to a recent review that identified 66 existing sites needing updated heritage citations and statements of significance, along with an additional 7 sites requiring specific changes. If approved, property owners and occupiers in these areas will have the opportunity to provide feedback during an extensive community consultation process.

The heritage overlay is essential for conserving and enhancing sites of cultural and natural significance in Whittlesea, including farm complexes, churches, cemeteries, schools, bridges, and historic homes. Mayor Martin Taylor emphasized the importance of this amendment, stating, “Heritage plays a vital role in Whittlesea’s identity, providing a lasting link to our rich cultural and natural history.”

The proposed changes aim to ensure all stakeholders have access to the most accurate information, which will assist in informed decision-making and streamline planning processes for developers and property owners alike.

As the council prepares for this significant update, residents are encouraged to engage in the upcoming consultation, making their voices heard on matters that directly impact their community’s heritage.

Stay tuned for further developments as the council moves forward with these changes. The outcome could shape the future of Whittlesea’s heritage preservation efforts, making it a pivotal moment for local residents and stakeholders.
