UPDATE: Wilcannia is honoring its war heroes today during a poignant Remembrance Day service that just concluded at the War Memorial. The community gathered this morning, showered in jacaranda flowers, to commemorate the ultimate sacrifice made by 21 local men who did not return from World War I.

This year, the focus was on Christie Walter Allison Jones, who left his home in Hood Street in April 1916. Tragically, he lost his life in the horrific battles at the Somme later that year, with his body never recovered. He was just 18 years old.

Among the attendees, Wilcannia Police Inspector Barry Roberts laid a wreath in honor of the Great War, while Sergeant Shawn Tilley paid tribute to the horses lost during the conflict by laying a sheaf of oats. Central School students Myla and Zhayle also participated, laying their school’s wreath and reciting the moving poem “In Flanders Fields”.

The service was led by Sister Elizabeth Young, who offered prayers to honor those who served. Local police provided crucial support, including assistance with a broken flag pole, ensuring the ceremony proceeded smoothly.

Organizers expressed gratitude to all who attended and contributed, highlighting the importance of community participation in remembering their local heroes. This heartfelt gathering serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during wartime and the ongoing impact on the community.

As the community reflects on this day, it is essential to remember the stories of those like Christie Walter Allison Jones—young lives forever changed by the horrors of war. The emotional resonance of this annual service reinforces the need to honor and remember the past while fostering a sense of unity among residents.
