BREAKING: A breathtaking underwater encounter has left a woman’s heart racing off the coast of Australia, capturing a moment she will never forget. Christine Watterson and her friend Marlon Quinn were freediving near Cape Conran, located 400 km east of Melbourne, when they were surprised by a curious southern right whale.

The incident unfolded just a couple of weeks ago as the pair set out to explore clear waters for freediving practice. What began as a typical day quickly transformed into a “rare and humbling experience” when the enormous whale made a sudden appearance. “[It] was a huge shock at first because it was a massive animal that just appeared out of nowhere,” Christine told Yahoo News.

Southern right whales are classified as endangered in Australian waters, weighing in at approximately 80 tonnes. These majestic creatures migrate to Australia’s southern coast from May to October for breeding and calving.

For nearly an hour, the gentle giant circled Christine and Marlon, swimming in “big, slow circles” around them. Christine described the experience as exhilarating: “Our hearts were racing the whole time. I was feeling pretty nervous but as time progressed, I started to relax. All I could think about was how incredibly privileged we were to share this encounter with such a beautiful animal.”

Marlon seized the moment, grabbing his underwater camera to capture stunning images of the whale swimming just meters away from Christine. The whale would occasionally disappear for several minutes before re-emerging, adding to the thrill of the encounter.

Eventually, the whale swam away, signaling the end of this extraordinary experience. “We climbed back on to the boat and we were completely elated!” Christine expressed. With nearly seven years of freediving and spearfishing experience, she remarked that this was perhaps “the most incredible wildlife interaction I have ever had in the ocean.”

Earlier this month, another emotional encounter occurred in Queensland’s Hervey Bay, where swimmers were brought to tears after two humpback whales greeted them.

This stunning wildlife interaction highlights the importance of marine conservation, as endangered species like the southern right whale are a critical part of Australia’s ocean ecosystem. Exciting developments continue as more individuals share their encounters with these incredible creatures, reminding us of the beauty and vulnerability of ocean life.
