UPDATE: Woodend Cricket Club kicked off its season with a commanding victory over Broadford, finishing at 2-135 in just 25 overs. The team’s strong start comes after a successful last season where they topped the league but fell short in the finals.
In a thrilling match played on September 30, 2023, Woodend showcased its potential, led by captain Marcus Stewart, who scored an impressive 49 not out. Coach Josh Eastley, in his second season, expressed optimism about the team’s growth after last year’s playoff experience, emphasizing that they are ready to take the next step towards championship success.
“It was a disappointing end to the season, but we still think it was relatively good as we were back in finals,” Eastley reflected. “We want to build on that, and I’m excited to see where we end up; the world is our oyster.”
The match saw Broadford bat first, managing only 134 runs before being bowled out in the 38th over. New signing Jacques Du Toit, a talented player from Southern Africa, led the bowling attack with three wickets. Eastley highlighted Du Toit’s experience as crucial for the younger players in the squad, stating, “He’ll strengthen our middle order.”
Woodend’s victory not only sets the tone for the season but also marks a significant step in their quest for the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup. The club has added several new players under 25 years old, positioning themselves for both immediate success and future development.
With the next challenge against Wallan on the horizon, Eastley is eager for the matchup, recalling his long history with the team. “It’s been a number of years since I played Wallan, and I’ve played against a lot of the players’ dads back in the day,” he said.
In other matches on the same day, Romsey triumphed over Sunbury United, thanks to Taylor Stevenson‘s stellar 111 runs, while Macedon defeated Wallan and Jarryd Vernon led Gisborne to victory against Rupertswood with a remarkable century.
Fans and players alike are buzzing with anticipation for what the rest of the season will bring as Woodend aims for championship glory.
