URGENT UPDATE: The Woodend Food Bank is calling for immediate community support as it faces rising demand from local residents. Currently assisting about 50 people weekly, this essential service is in urgent need of food and hygiene item donations to continue its operations.
Established just two years ago by the Woodend Neighbourhood House, the food bank was created to address the increasing need for food security in the area. Manager Melissa Baker emphasized the critical role of community involvement, stating, “The food bank was developed due to the demand and increasing need locally for people with food insecurity.”
The food bank is open for donations on Mondays and Thursdays from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM, located in the undercroft of the Woodend Neighbourhood House. Donations can be made directly at the house or through collection bins at local stores, Coles and IGA. However, perishable items must be brought directly to the house to ensure their freshness.
Melissa Baker highlighted a significant challenge: “There is no ongoing funding for food banks available, so we are very reliant on donations, either through the donation bins or through monetary contributions directly to the neighbourhood house.” This reliance underscores the urgency for community members to step up and contribute what they can.
The food bank accepts non-perishable items such as canned soups, tuna, cereals, instant coffee, and long-life milk. The community’s contributions are vital to sustain this lifeline for families facing food insecurity in the Macedon Ranges area.
