UPDATE: The Woodend-Hesket Hawks have made history once again, securing their third consecutive Riddell District Netball League premiership with a commanding 57-39 victory over the Bombers on Saturday. This triumph marks an incredible turnaround for the Hawks, who had never reached a grand final before the 2022 season.
The Hawks’ A-grade team, under the leadership of playing-coach Ty Coppinger, showcased their dominance throughout the match. Coppinger expressed her exhilaration following the win, stating, “It feels pretty amazing. It will take a little bit to sink in. I knew that we had the team to be able to do it.”
The match began with an intense back-and-forth as both teams exchanged goals. However, a late surge from the Hawks allowed them to take a five-goal lead at the first break. From that moment, the Hawks seized control, steadily extending their advantage and ultimately celebrating a decisive victory.
Coppinger emphasized the importance of setting the tone early against a Bombers team known for their strong second halves. “We know in the second half they are going to come firing, and they did,” she remarked. “It was hard out there and tough for the whole 60 minutes. Everyone stepped up and everyone played their role perfectly.”
Defensively, the Hawks were impenetrable, shutting down the Bombers’ experienced attack. Coppinger and her teammate Georgia Bowkett demonstrated exceptional synergy, making it difficult for the Bombers to mount a significant challenge. Coppinger was awarded the best on court medal, marking her second consecutive year receiving this honor.
The spotlight also shone on Natalie McDonald, the youngest player on the court at just 16 years old. Coppinger praised McDonald’s composure and growth throughout the season, saying, “I can’t speak highly enough of her and her improvement across the season.”
This victory is especially significant for junior players like Rebecca Hicks and Jessica Martin, who participated in their first A-grade premiership with the Hawks. Coppinger highlighted the importance of nurturing talent within the club, stating, “It’s so special, juniors of the club. Jess coming up into A-grade this year has taken it with two hands.”
Looking ahead, Coppinger has already committed to returning as coach for the upcoming season, stating confidently, “We’ll be back bigger and better, I would say.”
As the Hawks celebrate this monumental achievement, they solidify their status as a netball powerhouse, inspiring both current and future players within the Woodend-Hesket community. Stay tuned for more updates on their journey as they aim for a fourth straight premiership next season.
