wyndham-council-enforces-24-hour-cat-curfew-act-now-

UPDATE: Wyndham Council has just implemented a new 24-hour cat curfew, urging all cat owners to comply immediately. This significant change is part of the Domestic Animal Management Plan (DAMP) passed last year, which now places strict regulations on cats similar to those for dogs.

Effective immediately, cats must remain within property boundaries at all times. The council is currently in a phased introduction period, allowing owners time to prepare their homes and help their pets adjust to this new reality before full enforcement begins. However, the previous 10pm–6pm curfew will remain in effect as a grace period for the time being.

Authorities are launching an educational campaign throughout the year to assist cat owners in understanding how to effectively contain their pets. Resources are available on the Wyndham Council website, highlighting various options such as cat-proof fencing, cat enclosures, and innovative fence-top devices. These measures not only ensure the safety of the cats but also provide ways to keep them mentally and physically active indoors and outdoors.

The RSPCA strongly recommends cat containment as the most effective method to protect felines from potential dangers such as vehicle injuries, fights, and diseases. Additionally, this initiative aims to mitigate the disturbances caused by roaming cats, which can lead to issues like spraying and digging in neighbors’ gardens.

A council spokesperson emphasized the importance of compliance, stating, “Cat containment not only protects the animals but also preserves neighborhood harmony.”

As cat owners in Wyndham adjust to this new regulation, they are encouraged to visit www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/cat-containment for a comprehensive list of resources and top tips on keeping their cats safe at home.

The urgency of this new policy cannot be overstated—cat owners must act now to avoid penalties and ensure their pets’ safety. Stay tuned for further updates as the council continues to roll out its initiatives.
