New reports confirm a shocking surge in youth crime in Wodonga, with youth offences skyrocketing from 219 in 2024 to 424 in 2025. Local business owners and residents gathered for an urgent community safety forum on October 22, 2025, to discuss the escalating issue, which has left many feeling unsafe in their own neighborhoods.
The manager of Treasure Hunter Wodonga, Tanya Cox, highlighted a troubling trend: her store has seen three staff resign due to harassment from shoplifters. “These people come in and they’re bright and bubbly… and you watch this spark go over time because they’re just getting hammered by people,” Cox explained, emphasizing the emotional toll on her employees. She estimates her store loses hundreds of dollars each week to theft, frequently finding 10-15 empty packages of stolen goods daily.
The situation at the Birallee Shopping Centre, identified as a hotspot for theft, is dire. Staff and security at the center have limited authority to tackle shoplifting. “All I can do is ask thieves whether they would like a basket for the items shoved up their jumper,” Cox lamented. The most commonly stolen items include make-up, hardware, and stationery, with Cox noting the increasing involvement of minors in these crimes.
Local officials, including Opposition spokesperson for police David Southwick and Wendy Lovell, attended the forum to discuss solutions. “If there are kids dropping out of school, what can we do to keep them better engaged?” Southwick questioned, addressing the alarming truancy rates in the area.
Resident Tony Boyd voiced his concerns, stating, “Of course, there was crime, but not to the extent of what you see now. There’s no accountability or consequences.” Boyd’s comments reflect a growing sentiment that youth offenders face little to no repercussions for their actions, exacerbating the problem.
The emotional strain on community members is significant. “It’s mentally draining… there are plenty of days I go home upset,” Cox expressed, urging local authorities to take action.
As Wodonga grapples with this escalating crisis, the community is calling for immediate measures to ensure safety and accountability. Residents and business owners alike are demanding a stronger response from authorities to address the root causes of rising youth crime and restore a sense of security in their lives.
The next steps remain critical as community members push for effective solutions. Watch for updates on initiatives proposed following the forum and efforts to engage youth positively in the region.
