An Australian man, identified as David Clark, tragically died after being struck by a police vehicle in London. The incident occurred on January 7, 2024, in the Southwark area while Mr. Clark was crossing the street. He was reportedly hit by one of two police vehicles responding to an emergency call.
According to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), Mr. Clark, aged 35, was crossing near the junction of Borough High Street and Trinity Street shortly after 12:30 AM. Both police vehicles involved were activated with sirens and emergency lights at the time of the collision. The IOPC noted that video footage shows the first police vehicle passing through the junction when the incident occurred.
Upon impact, the drivers of both police vehicles immediately stopped and provided first aid to Mr. Clark. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The IOPC has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision, which began on the morning of the incident.
Investigation Underway
A post-mortem examination has been conducted, with the IOPC awaiting a date for an inquest to open. Investigators have already reviewed CCTV and police body-worn video footage, alongside accounts from the officers involved. Further inquiries regarding additional CCTV footage from the vicinity are ongoing.
IOPC director Amanda Rowe expressed condolences to Mr. Clark’s family and friends, both in the UK and Australia. She stated, “Our deepest sympathies are with Mr. Clark’s family and friends… We have met with his family to advise them of our investigation, and they will be provided with regular updates. They have requested privacy at this difficult time.”
Rowe emphasized the importance of an independent investigation following the death of a member of the public in an incident involving police. At this stage, the officers involved are being treated as witnesses within the ongoing inquiry.
