israel-s-defence-minister-declares-gaza-under-heavy-attack

Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, stated on October 10, 2023, that “Gaza is burning” following extensive military strikes that targeted Gaza City overnight. The remarks come as Marco Rubio, the US Secretary of State, prepares to travel to Qatar for discussions with officials who are dissatisfied with Israel’s recent military actions.

Reports indicate that Israel’s military operations have intensified in Gaza, with significant strikes reported across Gaza City early Tuesday morning. The strikes are part of ongoing efforts to target Hamas, and they follow an earlier attack that resulted in the deaths of five Hamas members and a local security official.

While at a summit on Monday, Arab and Muslim nations condemned Israel’s actions, they refrained from proposing any substantial measures to hold Israel accountable. This reflects the complexities of achieving diplomatic pressure to influence the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

In comments made while departing Israel for Qatar, Secretary Rubio expressed concern over the escalating situation. He suggested that the offensive against Gaza City may mark the beginning of a critical phase in the conflict. “We think we have a very short window of time in which a [peace] deal can happen,” Rubio explained. “We don’t have months anymore, and we probably have days and maybe a few weeks, so it’s a key moment – an important moment.”

Rubio emphasized the need for a negotiated settlement, stating, “Our preference, our No.1 choice, is that this ends through a negotiated settlement.” He acknowledged the risks that a more intense military campaign poses to civilians in Gaza. He remarked, “The only thing worse than a war is a protracted one that goes on forever and ever.”

Palestinian residents in Gaza City reported heavy bombardment throughout the morning, highlighting the immediate human impact of the ongoing military operations. As the situation evolves, the international community watches closely, weighing the implications for regional stability and humanitarian concerns.

The ongoing conflict underscores the urgent need for a resolution that addresses both security concerns and humanitarian issues, as the window for a peaceful settlement appears to be narrowing.
