A tragic knife attack in Richelieu, located in the Commewijne district approximately 25 km east of Paramaribo, has resulted in the deaths of nine individuals, including children. The incident occurred on March 3, 2024, and has sent shockwaves through the community.
According to the Suriname Police Corps, the attack began following a heated argument between the 43-year-old suspect and his estranged wife over the phone. Neighbours reported that the confrontation escalated when the suspect’s wife indicated she would not pick up their children but would send someone else instead. When police arrived at the scene, the suspect attempted to assault the officers. He sustained injuries during his arrest and is currently recovering in a hospital. The police have confirmed that a sixth child and another adult were seriously injured and are receiving treatment at a hospital in Paramaribo.
