
A man has been taken into custody following a violent incident at a Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan, where 11 people were stabbed on March 16, 2024. Among the victims, six are reported to be in critical condition, prompting a swift response from local authorities.
Shortly before 16:45 local time, a 42-year-old man entered the store and used a folding knife to carry out the attack. The Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the motive appears to be random. A sheriff’s deputy arrived on the scene within minutes and apprehended the suspect, with assistance from store employees and customers who also helped treat the victims.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, where they established a triage area in the parking lot of the shopping centre. The incident caused panic among shoppers, with many seeking safety as the situation unfolded.
Tiffany DeFell, a local resident, described the chaos she witnessed from the parking lot. She stated, “It was really scary. Me and my sister were just freaking out. This is something you see out of the movies. It’s not what you expect to see where you’re living.”
According to Munson Healthcare, the largest hospital in northern Michigan, all 11 victims are receiving treatment at their facility. Spokesperson Megan Brown reported that six individuals are in critical condition, while five others are in serious condition.
