Pope Leo has called on political and military leaders to reject the manipulation of religion for violent ends. In a significant message issued annually by the leader of the Catholic Church, which has approximately 1.4 billion members, he emphasized the need for believers to actively oppose the use of faith as a justification for violence.
“Unfortunately, it has become increasingly common to drag the language of faith into political battles, to bless nationalism, and to justify violence and armed struggle in the name of religion,” Pope Leo stated. He urged individuals to counter these forms of blasphemy, which he believes tarnish the sanctity of God’s name, through their actions and moral conduct.
Warnings About Artificial Intelligence and Military Spending
In his four-page message, Pope Leo also addressed the rising reliance on artificial intelligence in warfare. He expressed concern that a growing number of political and military leaders are moving away from personal accountability, with decisions about life and death being increasingly entrusted to machines. He described this trend as “an unprecedented and destructive betrayal of the legal and philosophical principles of humanism that underlie and safeguard every civilization.”
During his first year as Pope, following his election in May to succeed the late Pope Francis, Leo has frequently spoken about the challenges posed by advancements in artificial intelligence. On his first overseas trip as pontiff, he visited Turkey in November, where he implored Christian leaders in the Middle East to categorically reject the use of religion to justify war, violence, or any form of extremism.
The Pope’s message also highlighted a concerning trend in global military spending. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, worldwide military expenditures rose by nearly 10 percent in 2024, reaching a staggering total of $2.7 trillion (approximately A$4.1 trillion). This increase reflects a confrontational mindset that, according to Pope Leo, is deepening global instability and unpredictability.
Pope Leo’s remarks resonate amid a world grappling with conflict and the misuse of religious rhetoric. As he continues to advocate for peace and accountability, his message serves as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with leadership, particularly in times of escalating tensions.
