Russian military forces have conducted a significant wave of strikes across Ukraine, targeting critical infrastructure and resulting in multiple casualties. The attacks, which occurred overnight, involved nearly 300 drones, 18 ballistic missiles, and seven cruise missiles, as confirmed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. The strikes have left at least four people dead and have severely impacted heat and power supplies, exposing millions to perilous winter conditions.
The primary focus of the assault was energy-generation facilities and substations, according to Zelenskiy’s statement on the Telegram app. He emphasized the urgent need for air defense systems, stating, “Every such strike against life is a reminder that support for Ukraine cannot be stopped.” Ukrainian air defense units successfully intercepted 247 drones and seven missiles, according to the air force. Nevertheless, damages were reported at 24 sites, prompting emergency power cuts in major cities including Kyiv, Chernihiv, Odesa, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Donetsk.
The impact of the strikes has been particularly severe on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. DTEK, the country’s largest private energy company, reported significant damage to equipment at one of its thermal power plants. Russia has consistently targeted Ukraine’s energy system throughout the ongoing conflict, asserting that such actions aim to weaken Ukraine’s war capabilities. However, Ukrainian officials argue that the intent behind these strikes is to inflict suffering and undermine national morale.
As the fourth winter of the conflict approaches, conditions are becoming increasingly harsh. Temperatures in Kyiv have plummeted to around -13C, with residents facing ongoing electricity and heating shortages following earlier strikes. Ukrainian officials have indicated that this winter may prove to be the coldest and darkest yet, exacerbated by intensified attacks and cumulative damage to infrastructure.
Diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict have yet to yield significant results, with Russian forces reportedly making slow but steady advances in the eastern Donetsk region. In Kharkiv, a city located approximately 30 km from the Russian border and frequently targeted, four individuals were killed when a postal terminal was struck during the attacks. Regional governor Oleh Syniehubov reported that more than 30 people were injured in the incident, which he described as a mass assault involving Iranian-designed drones.
The southern port city of Odesa also faced casualties, with at least five people injured during the overnight strikes. Emergency services reported fires at various sites, including an unused building, a fitness center, and a vocational school. Furthermore, in the industrial city of Kryvyi Rih, two individuals sustained injuries as Russian attacks damaged civilian infrastructure, homes, and gas pipelines.
