Thailand’s military has accused Cambodian forces of violating a ceasefire agreement at three locations along their disputed border. These allegations emerged on Wednesday, just two days after both nations reached an accord in Malaysia, which took effect at midnight on July 31, 2023. The ceasefire aims to prevent further escalation of a conflict that has resulted in at least 43 deaths and displaced over 300,000 civilians in recent fighting.

The truce was brokered following significant diplomatic efforts from Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and U.S. President Donald Trump. In a call to both leaders, Trump emphasized that progress on trade negotiations would be contingent on maintaining peace. As the United States serves as the largest export market for both nations, they currently face a 36% tariff on goods unless a reduction can be negotiated.

On Wednesday, Thailand reported that Cambodian forces opened fire on positions in Sisaket province, located along the Cambodian border. Major-General Winthai Suvaree, a spokesperson for the Thai army, stated, “Cambodian forces used small arms and grenade launchers, prompting Thailand to respond in self-defense.” He characterized the incident as the second violation since the ceasefire agreement, indicating that it undermines trust and undermines de-escalation efforts between the two countries.

In response to these accusations, Cambodia has firmly rejected the claims. Spokesperson for the Cambodian Foreign Ministry, Chum Sounry, called the allegations “false, misleading and harmful to the fragile trust-building process.” He reiterated Cambodia’s commitment to the ceasefire and advocated for an independent monitoring mechanism to verify compliance.

Both sides agreed not only to halt military engagements but also to cease troop movements, which sets the stage for a high-level military meeting scheduled for August 4, 2023, in Cambodia. Although there have been no reports of heavy artillery exchanges, uncertainty remains regarding troop withdrawals from either side.

As tensions persist, the international community is closely monitoring the situation, given the potential implications for regional stability and economic relations. The outcome of the upcoming military meeting may provide critical insights into the future of relations between Thailand and Cambodia.
