At least 36 people were killed and dozens injured during a stampede at a campaign rally in Tamil Nadu, India, on Saturday, as popular actor-turned-politician Vijay addressed a large crowd. The incident occurred when attendees surged towards the stage, overwhelming security measures and causing chaos. Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister M.K. Stalin confirmed that among the deceased were eight children and 16 women.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, Stalin expressed his profound sadness, stating, “I am deeply saddened and pained to learn that 36 people have died so far.” Local politician V. Senthilbalaji revealed that approximately 58 people sustained injuries and were subsequently transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Vijay, who halted his speech amid the turmoil, shared his grief on social media, saying his “heart is shattered” by the tragedy. He extended his condolences to the families affected, referring to the victims as “dear brothers and sisters.”
Government Response and Investigation
In response to the incident, M.K. Stalin announced the formation of a commission led by a retired judge to investigate the causes of the stampede. Furthermore, he declared a compensation package of one million rupees (approximately $12,000) for the families of the victims.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his sorrow over the incident. In a social media statement, he stated, “My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. Wishing strength to them in this difficult time.”
Recurring Safety Concerns
This tragic event highlights ongoing safety issues at mass gatherings in India, where such deadly incidents are not uncommon. Poor crowd management and inadequate safety measures often contribute to chaos at large events. Notably, a stampede at the Kumbh Mela religious fair in January this year resulted in the deaths of 30 people, while a Hindu religious gathering in Uttar Pradesh last July led to 121 fatalities. Earlier this year, 11 fans were crushed to death during celebrations in Bengaluru.
