The UK Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for Cambodia and Thailand following violent clashes at the border, which erupted on July 24, 2023. The skirmishes involved exchanges of gunfire between troops from both countries, leading to casualties on the Thai side, including at least 12 civilian deaths, among them two children. The situation escalated after Thailand recalled its ambassador to Cambodia due to a recent landmine explosion that injured a Thai soldier.
In response to the ongoing conflict, Thailand has closed its border with Cambodia and has advised all its nationals in Cambodia to leave the country. The Foreign Office’s advisory highlights that the border area near the Preah Vihear temple has been a long-standing point of contention between Thailand and Cambodia, with sporadic clashes occurring over the years.
Casualties and Travel Restrictions
As violence continues, reports indicate that at least 14 individuals have been injured in Thailand, including a five-year-old child. Cambodia has yet to release details regarding any potential casualties on its side. The UK Foreign Office emphasized that travel to the disputed areas should be undertaken with caution. Their advisory specifically notes, “Take extra care when travelling in this area, and follow the instructions of the local authorities.”
For Thailand, the Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to southern regions close to the Malaysian border, including Pattani Province, Yala Province, Narathiwat Province, and Songkhla Province. The travel advisory extends to the Hat Yai to Padang Besar train line, which traverses these provinces, due to regular attacks in the area.
Diplomatic Efforts and Regional Concerns
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has expressed concern over the escalating conflict and plans to engage with leaders from both Thailand and Cambodia. He stated, “The least we can expect from them is to just stand down and hopefully to try and enter into negotiations.” His comments reflect the broader regional worry about the potential for further violence and instability in Southeast Asia.
As the situation develops, the UK Foreign Office has not released additional updates related to the recent skirmishes. Travelers are urged to remain vigilant and heed local advisories as tensions continue to rise along this historically disputed border.
