Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is conducting urgent discussions with leaders and officials from approximately 30 nations to negotiate a peace deal aimed at ending the ongoing war with Russia. This coalition of international support reflects Kyiv’s efforts to secure fair terms for a resolution as the conflict enters its fourth year.
Among the notable participants in these talks, held via video link, are leaders from Germany, the United Kingdom, and France. The hastily arranged meetings come as Ukrainian officials seek to navigate the complex landscape of international diplomacy, particularly in light of demands from Donald Trump, the former President of the United States. Trump has been vocal about the need for a swift settlement, urging Zelenskiy to adopt a pragmatic approach regarding territorial concessions to Russia.
The urgency of the situation escalated further when Trump revealed that he and European leaders had engaged in “pretty strong terms” discussions about potential peace proposals. He emphasized that Zelenskiy “has to be realistic” about Ukraine’s position. The timeline for a potential agreement has become increasingly pressing, with Trump initially setting a deadline for Kyiv to accept a peace plan by the end of November 2023. Previous deadlines set by Washington have passed without significant progress, leading to skepticism about achieving a breakthrough.
Russia, for its part, is keen to demonstrate its willingness to engage in the peace process. Sergey Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, stated that Moscow has communicated “additional proposals” concerning collective security guarantees. These guarantees are viewed by Ukraine and European nations as essential for deterring future aggression. Lavrov highlighted the need to consider security beyond Ukraine alone, although he did not disclose specific details about the Kremlin’s proposals.
As these diplomatic efforts unfold, Ukraine launched one of its most significant drone attacks in the nearly four-year conflict. The assault disrupted operations at all four airports in Moscow, halting flights for seven hours. Additionally, airports in eight other Russian cities faced restrictions, according to Russia’s civil aviation authority, Rosaviatsia. The Russian defense ministry reported intercepting 287 Ukrainian drones across various regions, showcasing Ukraine’s military capabilities and challenging the narrative that Russia’s invasion is overwhelmingly successful.
Analysts suggest that Russian President Vladimir Putin aims to negotiate from a position of strength. Since the onset of the full-scale invasion in February 2022, Russia has only managed to capture approximately 20 percent of Ukrainian territory.
