The United States military has intensified its operations against Iran, with Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth announcing a strategy aimed at achieving complete dominance over Iranian airspace within two days. This escalation comes as the conflict expands, following reports of a thwarted assassination plot against former President Donald Trump by an Iranian covert unit.

Military Strategies and Regional Impact

During a briefing at the Pentagon on March 13, 2024, Hegseth reassured the public that the U.S. military is prepared to engage in continuous aerial operations against Iranian targets. He stated, “It means we will fly all day, all night, day and night, finding, fixing and finishing the missiles and defence industrial base of the Iranian military.” Hegseth’s remarks were intended to convey a sense of control amid increasing tensions in the region.

Hegseth dismissed concerns regarding Iran’s retaliatory strikes, which have included missile and drone attacks, asserting that the U.S. would maintain adequate defensive capabilities. He emphasized that additional warplanes would be deployed to bolster U.S. operations. “They are toast and they know it or at least soon enough, they will know it,” he added, referring to Iran’s military capabilities.

As this conflict enters its fifth day, the repercussions are being felt regionally, with Iran retaliating against neighboring countries and Israel intensifying its military actions against Hezbollah in Lebanon. Just prior to Hegseth’s briefing, Turkey’s defence ministry reported that NATO air defences intercepted a ballistic missile launched from Iran, preventing it from entering Turkish airspace.

Assassination Plot and Civilian Casualties

In a significant claim, Hegseth revealed that an Iranian operative involved in a planned assassination of Trump had been “hunted down and killed.” He stressed that this operation was not the primary goal of the ongoing military campaign, but it highlighted the U.S. commitment to countering threats from Iran. “We’ve known for a long time that Iran had intentions of trying to kill President Trump and U.S. officials,” he stated.

Amid the military operations, reports indicate that Iran’s missile strikes have diminished significantly, with a reported 86 percent drop in ballistic missile attacks since the onset of hostilities and a 73 percent decrease in one-way drone strikes. Hegseth and other officials have reassured the public that the U.S. maintains sufficient precision munitions to handle the current military objectives.

Despite these claims, the Pentagon is facing scrutiny over a recent airstrike that resulted in the deaths of at least 175 civilians at an Iranian girls’ school, one of the deadliest incidents of the conflict to date. Hegseth reiterated that the U.S. never targets civilian sites and that an investigation is underway regarding this tragic event.

Hegseth characterized Iran’s retaliatory actions as “indiscriminate,” while praising the defensive measures taken by U.S. allies in the region. As tensions continue to escalate, the international community watches closely for further developments in this complex and evolving conflict.
