The Recording Academy celebrated music legends by awarding the Lifetime Achievement Award to Chaka Khan, Cher, Carlos Santana, Paul Simon, Fela Kuti, and Whitney Houston at the Grammy Special Merit Awards held on February 4, 2023. The ceremony took place at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles, where Khan was the only honoree present to accept her award.
As she received the honor, Khan reflected on her journey, stating, “Music has been my prayer, my healing, my joy, my truth. Through it, I saved my life.” A documentary highlighting her extensive career preceded her acceptance speech. The film showcased her significant contributions both as a member of the funk band Rufus and as a solo artist, featuring classic hits such as “Tell Me Something Good” (1974), “Ain’t Nobody” (1983), “I’m Every Woman” (1978), and “I Feel For You” (1984), which was penned by Prince.
Khan, adorned in a shimmering sea green gown, expressed gratitude towards her collaborators, playfully acknowledging, “not all of them were entirely sane.” She emphasized her fortune in sharing the stage with “extraordinary artists, musicians, writers, producers, and creatives,” before adding, “and cuckoos.”
Honoring the Legacy of Fela Kuti and Whitney Houston
Family members accepted the Lifetime Achievement Awards on behalf of Fela Kuti, the influential Nigerian Afrobeat musician who passed away in 1997, and Whitney Houston, the celebrated singer who died in 2012. Kuti’s award was received by three of his children, who described their father as a “producer, arranger, political radical, outlaw and the father of Afrobeat.” Femi Kuti spoke on behalf of the family, stating, “Thank you for bringing our father here. It’s so important for us, it’s so important for Africa, it’s so important for world peace and the struggle.”
Pat Houston, Whitney’s sister-in-law and longtime manager, also delivered a heartfelt tribute, saying, “Her voice – that voice! – remains eternal. Her legacy will live forever.”
The audience expressed disappointment when Harvey Mason Jr., the academy president, announced that Cher would not be attending the event in person. Instead, she delivered a brief message via video. “The only thing I ever wanted to be was a singer. When I was four years old, I used to run around the house naked, singing into a hairbrush,” she recalled with a hint of humor. “Things haven’t changed all that much.”
Carlos Santana and Paul Simon’s Tributes
Following the video message from Cher, Carlos Santana spoke on video after his son, Salvador Santana, accepted the award on his behalf. Carlos highlighted the role of music in providing hope during challenging times, stating, “The world is so infected with fear that we need the music and message of Santana to bring hope, courage, and joy to heal the world.”
Additionally, Bernie Taupin, longtime collaborator of Elton John, paid tribute to Paul Simon, referring to him as “the greatest American songwriter alive.” This recognition adds to Simon’s longstanding legacy in the music industry, further showcasing the impact of these artists on generations of musicians and fans alike.
The Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards serve as a reminder of the profound influence these artists have had on the world of music, celebrating their contributions and ensuring their legacies endure for years to come.
