A recent wedding at the W Brisbane in Queensland has made headlines as Australia’s first-ever Squid Game-themed ceremony. Olivia and Anthony transformed their special day into an immersive experience, combining traditional elements with dramatic touches inspired by the popular Netflix series.
According to Emma Tobler, the hotel’s senior wedding executive, the couple’s vision blossomed into a unique celebration over approximately 18 months. “It is not something we do every day for a wedding,” Tobler commented, emphasizing the couple’s desire for a distinctive experience that reflected their love story.
The ceremony commenced with a romantic setting, featuring a floral arch on the sun deck overlooking the Brisbane River. The couple exchanged vows and celebrated their first kiss with the release of white doves, embodying classic wedding traditions before venturing into the themed festivities.
Once inside the hotel, guests were transported into a realm reminiscent of the series. Tobler remarked, “It feels like stepping into the Netflix show itself.” Olivia and Anthony made a grand entrance dressed as the show’s elite VIPs, accompanied by their bridal party in guard uniforms. The atmosphere was charged with excitement as twenty actors donned iconic Squid Game costumes and masks, engaging with guests throughout the night.
The evening’s entertainment kicked off with a Dalgona Cookie competition, hosted by an MC portraying the enigmatic Front Man character. Guests faced off in teams, and those who succeeded advanced to a high-stakes round of Red Light, Green Light. “They have a secret room reveal for a red light green light extravaganza,” Tobler explained. Any movement during this challenge resulted in a return to the starting line and a playful champagne top-up, adding to the evening’s thrill.
Winners of the games earned not only bragging rights but also the glory of being the first to cross the finish line. Wedding stylist Hannah Williams from Main Event Weddings initially anticipated a traditional, all-white wedding, but was thrilled by the creative challenge presented by Olivia and Anthony’s vision. “When they said they wanted a Squid Game theme, I was a little bit taken aback, but I was also excited because I thought, ‘wow, this is actually going to challenge me,’” she noted.
Williams utilized the show’s signature colors—deep reds, blacks, and golds—to craft a modern yet luxurious ambiance that aligned with the couple’s vision. For Olivia, the collaboration with the hotel to achieve this unique theme was never in question. “Anthony is an anything-is-possible kind of man,” she expressed, highlighting the couple’s shared commitment to making their wedding unforgettable.
This creative approach to weddings not only reflects evolving trends in personal celebrations but also showcases how couples are increasingly seeking to infuse their personalities into their special days. The W Brisbane’s Squid Game-themed wedding stands as a testament to love’s boundless creativity, inviting others to rethink traditional wedding norms.
