URGENT UPDATE: MWC26 Barcelona has officially opened, signaling a pivotal moment for the global connectivity industry. Industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators have gathered to address the urgent need for enhanced 5G deployment, the rise of AI challenges, and the escalating threats to digital safety. This week-long event promises to redefine the future of digital connectivity.
In his opening keynote, Vivek Badrinath, Director General of the GSMA, emphasized three critical priorities: investment in standalone networks, increasing access to responsible AI, and coordinated global action to fortify digital security. “If we want to unlock the full promise of 5G and harness AI responsibly, we must act with urgency,” Badrinath stated.
The urgency of this call to action stems from alarming statistics revealed in the Mobile Economy 2026 Report. The report shows that mobile technologies generated an astonishing $7.6 trillion in economic value in 2025, equivalent to 6.4% of global GDP. This figure is projected to surge to $11.3 trillion by 2030, representing 8.4% of GDP. Despite this growth, over 3 billion people remain unconnected, highlighting a critical gap in digital access.
The report also outlines the expected evolution of mobile connections, forecasting that by 2030, 57% will operate on 5G, while legacy 2G and 3G will only account for 1% and 5% of connections, respectively. Operator revenues are anticipated to grow from $1.19 trillion in 2025 to $1.36 trillion by 2030, aided by significant capital investment.
However, rising cybercrime poses a daunting challenge, with costs projected to escalate from $9.22 trillion in 2024 to $15.63 trillion by 2029. Badrinath warned that more than 90% of operators now perceive the threat environment as high or very high, necessitating a unified, immediate response.
MWC26 features live-streamed keynotes and conference sessions available on demand, allowing a global audience to engage with the latest insights and innovations. The event runs until March 5, 2026, and serves as a crucial platform for dialogue and collaboration among stakeholders.
