A recent study conducted by People and Nature in collaboration with Griffith University has revealed that nature walks significantly improve mental health and longevity among women. The study, which tracked over 400 women participating in a 12-week training program for Coastrek, found measurable benefits in mental well-being compared to a control group.
Key Findings of the Study
Researchers measured various outcomes before and after the training, highlighting how walking in nature combines essential elements for overall health. The study identified three key drivers of longevity and mental well-being: physical movement, social connection, and a sense of purpose. Participants experienced lasting improvements in their mental health, affirming that nature acts as a powerful, yet often overlooked, tool for mental wellness.
Di Westaway OAM, founder of Coastrek and Wild Women on Top, emphasized the importance of these findings. “Nature remains one of Australia’s most under-prescribed mental health tools,” she stated. “Coastrek women have always known that happiness and health are amplified when you challenge yourself and connect with others outdoors. The right walk, with the right women, in the right place, can truly change your life.”
Growing Popularity of Nature Activities
The findings come at a time when participation in bushwalking and hiking in Australia is surging. The number of participants has increased from 800,000 in 2015 to a staggering 3.8 million projected for 2024-25. Notably, women now account for over half of all hikers, with midlife women aged 35–64 driving this growth. Many cite mental well-being, connection, and time spent outdoors as their primary motivations for engaging in these activities.
Coastrek is designed specifically for women with busy lives, incorporating guided training, community support, and adventure. This program demonstrates how low-cost, preventative lifestyle interventions can lead to significant mental and physical health improvements. Westaway encourages women to take action: “If you want to boost your well-being, strengthen your mental health, and even add years to your happiest life, here’s the prescription: grab your girlfriends, lace up your walking shoes, and hit the trail.”
The next Coastrek season is set to commence on 27 March 2026 on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, with events rolling out nationally across iconic coastal and wild locations. Women can now sign up for Coastrek events in 2026, joining thousands of others in reclaiming their health, confidence, and connection—one step at a time.
