Australia’s Foreign Minister, Penny Wong, welcomed her German counterpart, Johann Wadephul, to Canberra, highlighting the significance of their meeting in the context of a rapidly evolving global landscape. Wong emphasized the strong relationship between Australia and Germany, noting their shared commitment to navigating challenges by building coalitions and partnerships.

During the opening remarks, Wong underscored the importance of their Enhanced Strategic Partnership, which encompasses collaboration across various sectors, including defence, security, trade, and energy transition. She expressed her anticipation for discussions aimed at enhancing economic security and countering misinformation. Wong also noted the shared interest in ensuring a peaceful and prosperous Indo-Pacific, recognizing Germany’s valued role in the region.

Wadephul acknowledged the significance of his visit, marking his fourth trip to the Indo-Pacific. He emphasized the need for reliable partnerships amidst global uncertainties. “Australia is, for Germany, a long-standing, very reliable partner,” he stated, reinforcing the essence of their bilateral cooperation. He appreciated Australia’s support regarding the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, where civilians face severe hardships due to persistent attacks.

The German Foreign Minister expressed gratitude for Australia’s solidarity during this critical time, especially as Ukraine experiences extreme winter conditions and ongoing assaults. Wadephul highlighted the importance of defending the international rules-based system and the role of the United Nations in maintaining peace. He noted, “Doing this side by side, shoulder to shoulder with Australia is very important in these times.”

Wong extended her condolences on behalf of Australia for the recent terrorist attack at Bondi, reaffirming their joint stance against antisemitism and all forms of hatred. She praised Germany’s expanding diplomatic efforts in the Pacific, particularly its recent establishment of ties with Niue and its engagement with Tonga.

As the discussions progressed, both ministers expressed a commitment to strengthening their strategic ties further. Wong concluded her remarks by reinforcing Australia’s dedication to working alongside Germany to shape a stable and resilient global landscape. The ongoing collaboration reflects a mutual recognition of the growing importance of international partnerships in addressing complex global challenges.
