
Two men have been charged following a violent altercation with police at a pub in inner Sydney on October 15, 2023. The incident occurred at Bar Broadway after the city hosted an anti-immigration protest known as the “March for Australia.”
Witnesses reported that a group of individuals were “yelling offensively” at passers-by, prompting police intervention around 17:40 local time. During the attempt to disperse the group, a 48-year-old man allegedly assaulted a police constable. In the ensuing confrontation, another man, aged 29, also reportedly assaulted the officer. The constable sustained minor injuries as a result of the incident.
Videos circulating online captured the chaotic scene, showing two men fleeing from police while officers deployed pepper spray in an effort to apprehend them. Following a brief pursuit, both men were taken into custody.
The charges against them include affray, assaulting a police officer in the execution of duty without actual bodily harm, and hindering or resisting a police officer in the execution of duty. Both individuals have been refused bail and are scheduled to appear in court on Monday, October 16, 2023.
