bad-weather-interrupts-ryder-cup-aspirations-at-wyndham-championship

Defending champion Aaron Rai was positioned just a shot behind the leader when severe weather disrupted the second round of the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in North Carolina. Rai, who started with an impressive seven-under 63, had made significant progress, picking up six strokes before lightning halted play.

American golfer Cameron Young was the leader at 14 under par when the weather intervened. His fellow American Mac Meissner had also secured a strong position with a seven-under 63, while South Korea’s Sungjae Im posted a six-under 64 to tie for the clubhouse lead at 12 under.

Young expressed his ambitions, stating, “For me, it’s not necessarily about this week. I’ve got a goal. In the middle of September, I’d like to be in New York playing on that Ryder Cup team.” He emphasized the importance of focusing on long-term objectives rather than immediate outcomes, saying, “If I can achieve that, I can achieve a lot of things over these next four weeks.”

Rai’s performance included three birdies in his opening holes, followed by additional birdies at the fifth and two more after the turn before play was suspended on the 14th hole. The defending champion is keen to replicate his success from the previous year when he secured his maiden PGA Tour title at this event.

Young began his round strong after his opening 63, recording five birdies on the front nine. He will return to the course on Saturday morning, resuming play from just off the edge of the 16th green, aiming for a third consecutive birdie.

Overnight leader Joel Dahmen is also contending for a place in the top 70 of the FedEx Cup rankings, which is critical ahead of the play-offs. Dahmen’s second round included two birdies and two bogeys, leaving him at nine under.

Adding to the excitement, Gary Woodland achieved an albatross on the par-five fifth hole, which significantly bolstered his standing. He finished the round with a score of 64, placing him alongside Dahmen on the leaderboard.
