Everton Football Club appointed Scott Phelan as interim manager following the unexpected dismissal of Brian Sorensen this week. The decision comes as the team finds itself in a challenging position, sitting ninth in the Women’s Super League and only four points above the relegation zone. Despite securing a first home victory against Aston Villa last weekend, the club felt a change was necessary after a difficult season.
Phelan, who previously coached the club’s Under-18s, met with players for the first time on Thursday. Speaking at his introductory press conference, he reflected on the emotional impact of the recent coaching change. “There’s obviously been a lot of emotion in different ways over the last 24 hours or so,” Phelan stated. He emphasized the importance of fostering connections with the players and setting clear expectations as they move forward.
The interim manager noted that the team’s performance this season has not met their potential. “We should be doing a little bit better than maybe we have done over the course of the season,” Phelan remarked. He expressed optimism after observing positive moments during training, indicating a belief that the team can turn their fortunes around before the season concludes.
Phelan’s connection to Everton runs deep. He began his journey with the club as a youth player before taking on various coaching roles in the academy. This background gives him a unique perspective as he steps into this pivotal role.
In addition to his observations on the training pitch, Phelan also noted a positive atmosphere among the players off the field. “Off the pitch and around the canteen, there’s been plenty of happy, smiley faces,” he said. This morale boost is crucial as the team prepares for their upcoming match.
Everton’s next challenge will be against London City Lionesses this weekend, marking Phelan’s debut as interim coach. When asked about his personality, he humorously downplayed his fun side but emphasized the importance of securing three points in the match, stating, “If we get three points on Sunday, that will be fun.”
As Everton navigates this transitional period, Phelan’s leadership will be vital in steering the team towards improved performances and a stronger finish to the season.
