The tournament also highlighted the impressive performance of local juniors, many of whom reached finals or secured titles. One of the most thrilling matches involved Taylah Chessells and Annabelle Buerckner in the 12/U Girls final. In a gripping encounter, Taylah emerged victorious with a score of 7–5, 5–7, 14–12, which spectators described as a match “that had to be seen to be believed.”
Additionally, Tess Bassett had a commendable tournament, finishing as runner-up in the 16/U Girls Singles category. In the 10/U Boys Doubles, Ernie Buerckner and Beau Lawrence narrowly defeated their opponents Reid Humphry and Tristan Eaton to take home the title.
The 16/U Boys Doubles final saw Xavier Chessells and Thomas Lawrence perform admirably, reaching the final but ultimately falling short. Similarly, in the 16/U Girls Doubles, sisters Billy Buerckner and Kiera Buerckner demonstrated excellent skills, finishing as runners-up. In the 12/U Boys Doubles, Tully Ellis also achieved a notable result as runner-up.

The canteen, operated by the Yarrawonga Lions, once again delighted attendees with exceptional food and a lively atmosphere. Hot Shots Day at Australian Open a Success
On January 22, the juniors from the Yarrawonga Lawn Tennis Club participated enthusiastically in the Australian Open Hot Shots Day, organized by Tennis Victoria. This event provides rural juniors the opportunity to experience the excitement of the Australian Open firsthand. The club successfully filled its quota of 80 tickets, making it the largest participating group at the event.
The bus departed early at 04:30, and upon arrival in Melbourne, players and parents were granted exclusive access to the AO Ballpark. As the matches commenced, the juniors enjoyed premium seating in the John Cain Arena, witnessing some outstanding tennis.
The Yarrawonga Lawn Tennis Club expressed gratitude to Tennis Victoria for this opportunity, and all attendees were appreciative of the experience.
Local Tennis Updates and Upcoming Events
In local tennis news, Tuesday Men’s Tennis had a strong session that mirrored the quality of the Australian Open, although not all results were entered into the Match Centre due to the absence of chief organizer Ash Wheaton, who is currently on long service leave. The evening was highlighted by delicious pizza and refreshing beverages.
The club’s junior program is currently on break for the Christmas season, and members are reminded that they have full access to the courts during this time. Junior Tennis will resume on January 31, featuring another season of Premier League for older players alongside fun and skill development opportunities for younger participants.
The Wilby and District Tennis Association kicks off this week, continuing to provide social tennis for various ages and skill levels. Telford, currently at the top of the leaderboard with 57 points, will face Burramine at Yarrawonga, while Mulwala visits Tungamah. After Round 9, the standings show Telford leading, followed by Tungamah and Savernake.
The Thursday Ladies Tennis competition concluded its first season in December, with the next season scheduled to commence on February 5. Players can sign up individually, with teams formed to accommodate various abilities.
The Goulburn Murray Tennis Association is set to resume this week following a break for the long weekend, allowing members to participate in regional tournaments.
