PITTSBURGH – Star pass rusher T.J. Watt returned to practice for the first time on December 27, 2023, following a significant recovery period from a partially punctured lung. The injury occurred during a dry needling treatment, which necessitated reparative surgery. Watt’s return marks a pivotal moment for the Pittsburgh Steelers, as he had missed the previous two games due to the injury.

During Wednesday’s practice, Watt participated as a limited participant, engaging in individual drills with the defense. His teammate, outside linebacker Alex Highsmith, expressed enthusiasm about Watt’s presence on the field. “It’s awesome to have him out there. Just seeing him back out on the field with us, he’s getting better every single day,” Highsmith said. He added that Watt’s leadership is invaluable to the team.

While Watt was careful not to engage in intensive pass rush movements that would require raising his arms, he focused on cardio exercises alongside the defensive line. This strategic decision highlights Watt’s cautious approach to his recovery, ensuring he does not overexert himself too soon.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers noted the importance of Watt’s presence, stating, “Not sure what his status is going to be, but just his presence is good for our team.” Coach Mike Tomlin provided updates on Watt’s condition, indicating that the linebacker has made significant progress since his surgery. “That’s a fair estimation,” Tomlin remarked on Watt’s recovery, but emphasized that Watt would provide updates regarding his medical status.

As the Steelers prepare for a crucial game against the Cleveland Browns, where they have the opportunity to clinch the AFC North title and secure a playoff berth, Watt’s involvement in practice is a promising sign for the team’s aspirations. Tomlin confirmed that Watt’s status for the upcoming game remains uncertain, yet his return to practice is a positive indicator.

In addition to Watt’s return, fellow pass rusher Nick Herbig also participated in practice as a limited participant after missing the previous game due to a hamstring injury. The presence of both players could bolster the Steelers’ defensive lineup as they head into this critical matchup.

The Steelers and their fans will be watching closely as Watt continues to work on his recovery, eager to see him back in full form on the field.
