UPDATE: Over 30 volunteers from three local community groups came together on Sunday, March 1, 2023, to clean up Emerald, making an impressive impact on the town’s environment. The Emerald Scouts, Rotary Club of Emerald and District, and Johns Hill Landcare Group organized the event, which saw participants collecting approximately 18 bags of rubbish, including an old oven.

This community initiative unfolded at various locations, including Worrell Reserve and the Emerald Senior Citizens Club, creating a vibrant atmosphere filled with camaraderie and shared stories. Participants enjoyed delicious brownies, fresh fruit, brewed coffee, and a well-deserved barbecue lunch after their hard work.

Julie Thompson, treasurer of the Johns Hill Landcare Group, expressed gratitude towards the Emerald Scouts for providing essential equipment like the barbecue trailer and tables. She also thanked the Rotary Club of Emerald and District for cooking the sausages and promoting the event, which has become a staple in the local community’s efforts to reduce litter and pollution.

The annual clean-up event aligns with Clean Up Australia Day, typically observed on the first Sunday of March. It provides a vital opportunity for residents to engage with their community while addressing environmental concerns. Volunteers emphasized that participating in such events not only helps the environment but also fosters connections among residents, allowing them to meet new people and share common interests.

As busy lives continue to dominate, these community groups highlight the importance of volunteering, which can lead to new friendships and a greater sense of belonging. The Emerald Rotary Club meets every Tuesday evening at 6:45 PM at the Paradise Hotel in Clematis, welcoming anyone interested in contributing to the community.

Residents of Emerald and surrounding areas are encouraged to participate in future clean-up efforts and community gatherings. For more information on upcoming events, visit the following sites: www.johnshill.org.au, www.emeraldrotary.org.au, and www.scoutsvictoria.com.au.
