A significant international operation has led to the seizure of the data leak forum known as LeakBase, which was implicated in various cybercriminal activities. Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and Europol, executed coordinated actions on March 3, 2026, resulting in numerous arrests and the closure of the forum, described by Europol as a “central hub in the cybercrime ecosystem.”
Founded in 2021, LeakBase quickly gained traction, amassing over 142,000 registered users. The forum facilitated the buying, selling, and exchanging of compromised data stolen from individuals and businesses worldwide, generating around 32,000 posts and over 215,000 private messages. Notably, the forum prohibited any activities involving data from Russia, emphasizing its selective operational policies.
The operation involved around 100 actions across multiple countries, including house searches and “knock-and-talk” interventions. While Europol did not disclose the exact number of arrests made, it confirmed that measures were taken against 37 of the forum’s most active users. Following the operation, authorities seized the domain of LeakBase and defaced it, signaling the forum’s permanent shutdown.
Law enforcement is now working to deanonymize users associated with the forum, having already engaged with several suspects. Edvardas Šileris, Head of Europol’s European Cybercrime Centre, remarked on the operation’s significance, stating, “This operation shows that no corner of the internet is beyond the reach of international law enforcement. What began as a shadowy forum for stolen data has now been dismantled, and those who believed they could hide behind anonymity are being identified and held accountable.”
This coordinated action reflects a broader commitment to combat cybercrime and protect individuals and businesses from data theft. Authorities are sending a strong message to cybercriminals: those who engage in trafficking stolen information will face the consequences of their actions.
