URGENT UPDATE: Brimbank residents have a unique opportunity to make a meaningful environmental impact this coming Sunday, September 7, at the Iramoo Wildflower Reserve in Cairnlea. Community members are invited to participate in an exciting wildflower planting day, aiming to plant 1,500 native wildflowers to help restore local ecosystems.
According to Dr. Megan O’Shea, a research associate at Victoria University, this initiative seeks to combat the spread of serrated tussock—a weed that threatens local biodiversity. “If you take something away, you need to put something back; otherwise, you just get more weeds,” Dr. O’Shea stated, highlighting the urgent need for community action.
This focused effort will not only replace invasive species but also promote the growth of native kangaroo grass, thereby enhancing habitats for the endangered striped legless lizard. “We’re just adding to the complexity of the system, meaning greater resources that support the plants and animals that should be out there,” Dr. O’Shea explained.
The planting day will feature hands-on demonstrations to ensure that all participants learn how to plant effectively. Each participant will receive a “planting license,” certifying their skills. “It’s just going to be fun; it’s not anything serious,” Dr. O’Shea reassured potential volunteers.
In addition to planting, there will be guided tours of the reserve and engaging activities for children, making it a family-friendly event. This community effort is not just about planting flowers; it’s about fostering a connection with nature and promoting local biodiversity.
Residents are encouraged to come out and support this vital initiative that aims to rejuvenate their local environment. For more information, visit Landcare Victoria’s website: https://www.landcarevictoria.org.au/planting.
