Urgent Update: Australia’s east coast is bracing for another severe flooding crisis as a “widespread and unpredictable” weather system prepares to unleash heavy rain on already saturated ground. Emergency services warn that communities, exhausted from a relentless year of flooding, could see up to 125mm of rain fall across a vast area of New South Wales (NSW) on Thursday and Friday.
The Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed that significant rainfall will primarily impact regions from NSW’s northwest to the Hunter area, with towns like Tamworth, Gunnedah, Narrabri, and Moree expected to experience up to 45mm on Wednesday alone, and isolated pockets receiving as much as 70mm. The mid-north coast could see totals of up to 80mm, with isolated areas potentially facing 110mm.
“It will bring widespread, moderate-to-heavy rainfall, essentially from today, but moving into Thursday and Friday before easing over the weekend,” said Steve Bernasconi from the Bureau of Meteorology. Flash floods and renewed river rises are anticipated, raising alarm for residents still recovering from previous disasters.
The region has already endured a challenging year, with devastating floods in May that resulted in five fatalities and extensive property damage in areas like Taree. Just last month, severe weather left tens of thousands without power and claimed another life along the mid-north coast. With rivers still elevated from these events, the risk of further flooding is extreme.
The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is on high alert, preparing for an influx of emergency calls. By 1:30 PM on Wednesday, the SES reported over 330 calls and had responded to more than 120 incidents. Deputy Commissioner Deb Platz emphasized the community’s fatigue but stressed the importance of remaining vigilant.
“Complacency is always a risk, especially among communities that have faced multiple events this year,” Platz cautioned. “Please, for your own safety, keep informed of local warnings and take necessary precautions to protect your family and friends.”
As the storm approaches, authorities are also reiterating warnings against driving through flooded roads. The SES is deploying aircraft and high-clearance vehicles to aid in rescue efforts and ensure public safety.
This latest weather event serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by communities along Australia’s east coast. With so much at stake, residents are urged to stay alert and prepared as the situation develops.
