hume-council-approves-urgent-school-parking-plan-to-cut-congestion

BREAKING: Hume Council has just announced a critical plan to tackle severe traffic congestion outside local schools, aiming to enhance safety and streamline drop-off and pickup procedures. During a council meeting on February 23, 2023, Councillor Ally Watson successfully pushed for the prioritization of marked parallel parking bays at Holy Cross Catholic Primary School and Gilgai Plains Primary School.

The alarming congestion around these schools has reached a tipping point, as Cr Watson highlighted the urgent need for improved infrastructure. “The congestion peaks fast during drop-off and pickup,” she stated, underscoring the challenges stemming from high car dependency and limited public transport options.

Currently, both schools feature spacious parking lanes, but the absence of clear marked bays leads to chaotic parking patterns. “Cars are banked up, drivers are circling around, and parents are frustrated,” Cr Watson explained. The council’s solution is straightforward: “We don’t need a multi-million dollar solution; what we need is line marking.”

The estimated cost for marking parallel parking spaces at both schools is a mere $5,000, a small investment for an immediate impact on the community. Cr Watson emphasized that clearly defined parking lines will maximize road space, alleviate congestion, and enhance safety. “It reduces the ‘one more lap’ syndrome and improves flow, safety, and common-sense parking,” she said.

The council is also considering a broader investment of $20,000 in parallel park line markings at schools across the municipality in the upcoming 2026/27 budget. This initiative comes as a response to safety concerns raised by local residents, with Cr Watson acknowledging their contributions. “I know that the lack of school crossings is a problem, but we’ll be addressing the line marking through this particular notice of motion,” she stated.

Moreover, Councillor Daniel English echoed the need for enhanced road safety, arguing that increased enforcement of road rules is essential. “Forty-kilometre zones and speed bumps just aren’t going to work without enforcement,” Cr English remarked. He urged local officials to prioritize the establishment of new police stations and crossings to address ongoing safety concerns.

As traffic issues escalate, the Hume Council’s proactive measures represent a significant step towards improving school safety and community welfare. Parents and residents are urged to stay informed about these developments as crucial changes are on the horizon.

With the council’s swift action, families can expect relief from congestion headaches, making school drop-offs and pickups a smoother experience. Watch for updates as the council moves forward with this essential initiative.
