UPDATE: 2026 is set to be a transformative year for Tamworth as several high-impact construction projects are underway or nearing completion. From health facilities to recreational centers, the upcoming developments promise to reshape the city and enhance community services.

The Friends of Nioka have successfully advocated for a larger palliative care facility, which was officially launched by NSW Health Minister Ryan Park in October 2025. The new facility will double the size of the current ward, featuring a dedicated courtyard and guest accommodations for families traveling to visit loved ones. Construction will continue into 2027, with the existing facility remaining operational until then.

In a controversial move, the Tamworth Regional Skywalk is expected to be completed by mid-year 2026, according to builders Forge and the Tamworth Regional Council. Despite facing legal challenges from local residents regarding its impact, construction will resume on January 12 after delays in material supply. Aimed at becoming a premier walking attraction, the Skywalk will provide a safer route to the lookout and enhance accessibility for all.

Meanwhile, the much-needed expanded mental health facility at Tamworth Hospital is nearing its operational phase. Executive director of infrastructure for Hunter New England Local Health District, John Barnard-Richardson, announced on December 10, 2025, that the building’s construction is nearly complete, with commissioning currently underway. The facility is expected to begin operations early in 2026, continuing the delivery of mental health services from the old Banksia House until then.

In an ambitious move, Baiada is set to create over 700 jobs with a new state-of-the-art poultry processing facility capable of handling 3 million chickens weekly. The plant aims to address local water supply concerns by incorporating a new water recycling system, although negotiations have stalled, leading to initial agreements for liquid waste management with the Tamworth Regional Council.

The University of New England (UNE) is also making headlines, as construction on its Peel Street campus is set to begin after overcoming setbacks related to asbestos remediation. The project, announced in November 2025, is seen as a critical commitment to the local community.

Additionally, the $45 million Aquatic, Education and Health Centre of Excellence is expected to break ground early this year on Jack Smyth Drive. This facility, which has already garnered awards for its planning, will include a gym, spa, and education facilities, aiming for completion by 2027.

These developments are not just about infrastructure; they represent significant investments in the community’s future. As Tamworth continues to grow, residents can look forward to enhanced health services, recreational opportunities, and job creation that promise to improve quality of life.

Stay tuned for more updates as these projects progress and shape the future of Tamworth.
