BREAKING: Authorities have just charged a key figure in a multimillion-dollar tobacco smuggling operation, revealing a shocking scheme that has evaded more than $36.3 million in Commonwealth taxes. The 49-year-old man from North Coburg was arrested on September 9, 2023, as part of a coordinated effort by Victoria Police, the Australian Federal Police, and the Australian Border Force.

This urgent crackdown comes amid rising concerns over “unspeakable violence” linked to the illicit tobacco trade in Victoria, which has seen a surge in arson and extortion offenses. Police are intensifying their efforts to combat these dangerous crime syndicates that threaten community safety.

The alleged mastermind is accused of masterminding the importation of over seven tonnes of loose-leaf tobacco, along with five million cigarettes and more than 5,000 vapes, concealed within everyday items like kitchen goods and clothing. By employing connections in the freight and logistics sectors, he reportedly facilitated the distribution of these products to various warehouses and tobacconists.

Police Commander Paul O’Halloran expressed outrage over the situation, stating, “What we have seen play out in Victoria, particularly during the past two years, is a number of violent crimes driven by the fight between these groups for the profits derived from the illicit tobacco trade.” He emphasized that these crimes have resulted in unnecessary deaths and put the broader community at increased risk.

The suspect faces 24 charges, including three counts of importing tobacco products with intent to defraud revenue, while his accomplice, a 29-year-old from Meadow Heights, was charged with one count of possessing unlawfully imported tobacco. Both individuals are set to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on September 11, 2023.

As investigations continue, police are warning of further arrests in connection with this significant operation. The community is urged to remain vigilant as authorities work to dismantle these dangerous networks.
