UPDATE: A 61-year-old man has been charged with gun and drug offences following a police raid in Bright as the search for suspected police killer Dezi Freeman intensifies. The arrest took place around 4:45 PM on Friday during a massive manhunt currently entering its sixth day.
Authorities confirmed that during the raid on August 29, officers seized multiple weapons and marijuana. The man, whose identity has not been disclosed, is charged with being a prohibited person in possession of an imitation firearm and possession of a drug of dependence. He has been granted bail and is set to appear before the Myrtleford Magistrates’ Court on October 3.
The search for Freeman, who fled into bushland near his rental property on Rayner Track on August 26, escalated after the tragic deaths of two police officers, Neal Thompson and Vadim De Waart, during the incident. A third officer was also injured. Chief Commissioner Mike Bush has confirmed that the search is focused on firearms linked to Freeman, who is considered armed and dangerous.
As of now, the manhunt involves 450 officers from various units across the country, battling adverse weather conditions including cold temperatures and heavy rainfall. While Chief Commissioner Bush noted that the weather poses challenges for the police, he emphasized that it also complicates matters for Freeman.
Authorities have issued a warning to the public across a large part of the North East region, advising people to remain vigilant while the armed suspect remains at large. Residents and travelers are advised to avoid Porepunkah, with recommended alternative routes being Happy Valley Road at C534 and the Kiewa Valley Highway.
Freeman’s wife and son were arrested on Thursday night but have since been released pending further investigation. Police are exploring whether anyone is aiding Freeman in his evasion.
The community remains on edge as they await updates on this developing situation. Anyone who sees Freeman is urged to call 000 immediately. The public’s cooperation is crucial as law enforcement works tirelessly to restore safety to the area.
