UPDATE: In a stunning display of talent, Macedon’s Ruby Watts has achieved a historic milestone by winning her second consecutive Riddell District Football League women’s best and fairest award. The announcement was made on Wednesday night, where Watts dominated the medal count with an impressive total of 35 votes, finishing a remarkable 13 votes ahead of Melton’s Pauline Hutchins.
This accolade comes on the heels of Watts’ outstanding performance in the finals, where she also secured the best on-ground medal during Macedon’s premiership victory, marking a back-to-back triumph for the Cats. “I had a really good time with the girls this season,” Watts expressed, highlighting the enjoyment she derived from the competition.
Throughout the season, Cats co-coach Chris Nolan implemented strategic challenges for Watts, pushing her to adapt to various positions on the field. “Playing in different positions was really fun,” she noted, having transitioned from her usual midfield role to contributing in the backline and even scoring goals when needed.
In an exciting twist, Watts revealed that she has also taken up umpiring this year—a role she has always aspired to. “Taking it up this year was a lot, but I enjoyed it,” she said, reflecting on her busy schedule. Watts, who previously played for Carlton in the Victorian Football League Women’s competition, stated that she has found her true home at Macedon and is not currently considering returning to a higher level. “I definitely will be going back to Macedon next year,” she confirmed, despite interest from other clubs. “I really enjoy it there.”
Watts’ remarkable season culminated in a clean sweep of the main awards, as she also earned the player of the year title. Additionally, she was one of five Cats recognized in the team of the year, alongside teammates Brianna Woodburn, Lilli Collins, Charlotte Noonan, and Taya Konis. The team was rounded out by notable players from other clubs, including Romsey’s Meg Brundell and Lancefield’s Alice and Lilly Brombley.
As the season wraps up, Watts will temporarily hang up her football boots and shift her focus back to cricket, returning to play for Gisborne.
With her sights set firmly on the upcoming season, Ruby Watts continues to inspire both teammates and fans alike with her unwavering dedication and impressive skill set. The Macedon community eagerly anticipates her return on the field next year as she aims to build on her extraordinary success.
