UPDATE: The search for two men missing at sea off Sydney’s coast has been officially suspended following a series of tragic incidents over New Year’s. Authorities confirmed that emergency services responded swiftly to a capsized boat near Palm Beach on December 31, 2023, but despite their efforts, the search has ended without finding the individuals.
Just before midday on New Year’s Eve, police received reports of a boat capsizing near Barrenjoey Headland. Emergency responders pulled a 47-year-old man from the water, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the scene. A 45-year-old man managed to reach the rocks and was rescued by the Toll Ambulance Rescue Helicopter. However, a 16-year-old passenger remains missing, and police reported the search for him has now been suspended.
In addition, a separate search for a 22-year-old man who experienced difficulties while swimming at Coogee Beach around 6:00 AM on January 1, 2024 has also been halted. Despite extensive efforts from the NSW Police, Marine Area Command, and Surf Life Saving NSW, he has not been located. Ongoing land patrols by Eastern Beaches Police Area Command will continue until further notice.
These incidents contribute to a grim statistic, as three people have drowned at NSW beaches during the New Year’s period. A 25-year-old woman was found deceased at Maroubra Beach, and another 45-year-old woman drowned at Dunbogan Beach near Port Macquarie.
Steven Pearce, chief executive of Surf Life Saving NSW, expressed deep concern about the spike in drownings, stating, “We knew that New Year’s Day would be extremely busy for us operationally because, statistically, people are three times more likely to drown during this period than at any other time of year.”
These recent events highlight the urgent need for heightened awareness of water safety, especially during busy holiday periods. With the search operations now suspended, the focus will shift to preventative measures and community education.
As the community mourns these losses, authorities urge beachgoers to take extra precautions and remain vigilant while enjoying the water. The situation is developing, and we will continue to monitor any updates from officials. Stay tuned for more information on this urgent matter.
