Explosions were reported in Kabul during the early hours of Friday, following heightened tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan. This escalation comes after Afghanistan launched a cross-border attack on Pakistani military positions, retaliating against airstrikes that Pakistan conducted earlier in the week. While the exact locations of the explosions remain unclear, the Afghan capital experienced significant unrest.

On Thursday night, Afghan forces initiated a military operation, claiming to have seized over a dozen Pakistani army posts along the border. The Pakistani government, however, disputed these assertions, stating that its troops were responding to “unprovoked fire” from Afghan forces. The Information Ministry in Islamabad confirmed that clashes were ongoing but dismissed claims of captured posts as inaccurate.

Videos circulated by Afghan security forces depicted military vehicles navigating rugged terrain amid gunfire, although their authenticity could not be independently verified by Reuters. Pakistani officials indicated that their military engaged in over two hours of fighting following Afghan fire directed at posts in the country’s northwest.

The situation along the 2,600 km Durand Line, which demarcates the border between the two nations, has remained volatile. Following recent clashes that began in October, a Qatari-mediated ceasefire had been established, though it has not entirely prevented sporadic exchanges of fire. Peace talks held in November did not yield a formal agreement, leaving tensions unresolved.

On Sunday, Pakistan’s military reported conducting airstrikes targeting militants from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the Islamic State in Khorasan Province, claiming to have killed at least 70 militants. Afghanistan’s Defence Ministry rejected these assertions, alleging that the strikes resulted in civilian casualties, including women and children. They condemned the actions as violations of Afghanistan’s sovereignty.

The spokesperson for Afghanistan’s Taliban administration, Zabihullah Mujahid, announced that large-scale offensive operations had been initiated against Pakistani military positions. He noted that specialized units would conduct operations under the cover of darkness, further escalating the conflict.

In response to the ongoing violence, Pakistan has increased its security measures, placing military forces on heightened alert and intensifying intelligence operations. Dozens of suspected militants, including individuals with Afghan nationality, have been arrested during this crackdown.

The situation remains fluid, and both nations continue to navigate the complexities of their relationship, marked by accusations and military actions. As the conflict unfolds, the international community watches closely, aware of the broader implications for regional stability.
