The White House has confirmed ongoing “sensitive discussions” regarding a proposal from US President Donald Trump aimed at resolving the conflict in the Gaza Strip. During a press briefing, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that details would be handled by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and the President himself, emphasizing the importance of discretion as negotiations unfold.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has issued a directive for all remaining Palestinians to evacuate Gaza City, describing this as their “last opportunity.” He warned that those who choose to stay would be viewed as militant supporters and would face the “full force” of Israel’s military operations. This comes amid a significant escalation of violence in the region, with local hospitals reporting at least 16 Palestinian fatalities in various strikes.
Hamas Responds to Trump’s Proposal
The discussions are particularly critical as Hamas continues to deliberate on Trump’s proposal for ending the war, sparked by its attack on October 7, 2023. A senior official from Hamas indicated to the Associated Press that certain aspects of the proposal are unacceptable and require amendments, although specifics were not disclosed. This official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, mentioned that Hamas had communicated its concerns to mediators from Qatar and Egypt and requested additional time for consultations with other Palestinian factions.
Approximately 400,000 Palestinians have fled Gaza City since Israel intensified its military campaign last month. Many remain trapped due to financial constraints or physical inability to relocate to safer areas in the south. Katz reiterated that this evacuation window is crucial, stating, “This is the last opportunity for Gaza residents who wish to do so to move south and leave Hamas terrorists isolated in Gaza City.”
Escalating Violence in Gaza
The situation in Gaza has deteriorated sharply, with a recent Israeli airstrike on a school sheltering displaced persons resulting in the deaths of at least seven individuals, including first responders. Casualties were reported at al-Ahli Hospital, where over three dozen people were treated for injuries. Additional strikes claimed five lives at a water tank gathering and further casualties occurred in various locations across Gaza City.
As the conflict escalates, the humanitarian situation grows increasingly dire. Hospitals are overwhelmed with casualties, and essential services are collapsing under the pressure of ongoing violence. With Yom Kippur, the high Jewish holiday of atonement, approaching, Israel will see closures in businesses and public services starting at sundown on Wednesday, creating additional challenges for those still in the affected areas.
