Dr. Ravin Sadhai OAM has been recognized for his significant contributions to community health with an award on Australia Day 2026. Over his career, he has developed innovative programs, including the “Pub Clinic” and “Ladies Lounge,” which aim to make medical care more accessible and engaging for local residents in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria.
Dr. Sadhai initiated the Pub Clinic in 2008 after observing that many men in their forties and fifties were not receiving regular medical check-ups. “My question then was, ‘how do I take my clinic to these fellows?’” he explained. This initiative has transformed the way healthcare is delivered in the community, creating a relaxed environment where men can gather, socialize, and discuss health issues while enjoying a casual drink.
The Pub Clinic, which has now been running for 17 years, has seen remarkable success. In its most recent event in 2025, nearly 130 people attended, showcasing a growing interest in preventive healthcare. This initiative has not only encouraged men to visit their General Practitioners but has also fostered a sense of community among attendees. “Anecdotal evidence suggests the initiative has led to more men going to their trusted GP and getting tested,” Dr. Sadhai noted.
Building on the success of the Pub Clinic, Dr. Sadhai launched the Ladies Lounge, which focuses on health issues pertinent to women. This event aims to create a similar atmosphere of openness and engagement, addressing topics often overlooked in traditional medical settings.
Dr. Sadhai’s connection to Bacchus Marsh extends beyond these initiatives. He began his medical career as a medic for the Bacchus Marsh Football Club in 2005 and continued to work with the Victorian Football League. “To this day, I am still in touch with many of those players I met a good 15 years ago,” he recalled. His passion for sports medicine reflects his commitment to the community, both on and off the field.
While his work in sports medicine has been fulfilling, Dr. Sadhai finds the most satisfaction in palliative care. “As a GP, most of our interactions with patients are transactional. But in palliative care, you develop a deep understanding of your patients,” he explained. He views this aspect of his work as a privilege, emphasizing the importance of building meaningful relationships with patients and their families.
Receiving the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) serves as a reminder of the support he has received from his family, particularly from his late father, Dr. Jay Sadhai. After emigrating from South Africa in 1977 at the age of seven, Dr. Sadhai witnessed his father’s profound impact on the Bacchus Marsh community, where he practiced for 30 years while actively engaging in anti-apartheid activism. “He’s the biggest inspiration in my life,” Dr. Sadhai said, reflecting on his father’s legacy and the values he instilled.
Through the Pub Clinic, Ladies Lounge, and his ongoing medical practice, Dr. Sadhai continues to honor his father’s dedication to community service. These initiatives not only improve individual health outcomes but also strengthen the fabric of the Bacchus Marsh community as a whole.
In a world where healthcare can often feel distant, Dr. Ravin Sadhai OAM’s approach highlights the importance of community engagement and the profound impact that accessible health initiatives can have on people’s lives.
