UPDATE: A man has tragically drowned at Crescent Head beach after being pulled from the water by two young lifesavers who were on their way to schoolies celebrations. The incident occurred around 3:30 PM on November 28, as emergency services scrambled to respond to multiple reports of a swimmer in distress at Point Plomer.
Authorities confirm that the Kempsey-Crescent Head SLSC Emergency Callout Team was mobilized, coordinating with lifeguards and emergency services to deliver a defibrillator to the scene. Despite the swift action from bystanders and the two teenage lifesavers from Bondi, who performed CPR for approximately 30 minutes, the man could not be revived.
This heart-wrenching event has prompted Surf Life Saving NSW to extend support to the young lifesavers involved while also expressing condolences to the victim’s family. CEO Steve Pearce emphasized the importance of safety as temperatures rise over the weekend, urging beachgoers to remain vigilant when swimming, particularly in unpatrolled areas.
“This is a terrible tragedy as we head into summer. We want everyone to enjoy our beaches safely,” Mr. Pearce stated. He urged swimmers to only enter the water where red and yellow flags are flying, ensuring the presence of lifeguards.
This incident marks a grim addition to the drowning toll in New South Wales, which has reached 15 drownings since July 1. The Mid North Coast Police District has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident, with a report to be prepared for the coroner.
As the community grapples with this loss, officials remind everyone to prioritize safety and awareness while enjoying the coastal waters. The situation is ongoing, and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
